Why I Don't Trust Dermatologists

I’ve had problems with acne since I hit puberty. It used to be terrible, but luckily it’s gotten better as I’ve grown up and learned how to take care of my skin better.

Since I’ve struggled with acne, I’ve gone to the dermatologist numerous times. Each time I leave with these little samples of stuff I’m suppose to use on a strict schedule. Most of the “stuff” they send me home with is loaded with Chemicals and just dries out my skin.

One summer, I actually got a very terrible sunburn on my face from losing my sunscreen one day. As my face was burning, I could kinda feel it. It felt like my face was far too hot, so I’d dip my face in the lake every once in awhile. The reason my friends noticed anything was wrong with my face, which was hours later outside the dining hall, was because it had become so swollen. I hadn’t looked at my face all day, but I look in a mirror and see my eyes are sunken-in looking and there’s something oozing out of some of my pores. It was disgusting.

Since that experience I started going to the dermatologist less often, well that is after they gave me “stuff” to heal my sunburn with. That summer was probably three-four years ago, but my next trip to the dermatologist was literally last summer. We explained our reason for distrust and the doctor swore that I’d be fine this next time.

So I try it out; I do all of the strictly timed and proportioned medicine they give. Within a week, my face was drier than the Sahara. Mind you, I was moisturizing and trying my hardest to keep it hydrated. So I stopped using it, I didn’t want to sacrifice the hydration of my skin for less acne. At the follow up appointment, I find out, that the two medicines had been switched. This matters, because one was for my whole face and the other was a spot treatment that is very drying.

At this follow up appointment, I’m given “stuff” that I haven’t used enough to be able to tell its use. My skin has cleared up on its own, faster than any dermatologist’s regimen. I’m not saying it doesn’t work for other people though, just not me.

I also have a post about my current skincare routine. To find it just look under lifestyle.
